Ryou's life had suddenly gone from perfect to horrid. All in the space of one day.

His sister hadn't been born as healthy as his family had expected. Hayari Yutaka, as she had been named, had been born the previous day. Doomsday, Ryou had previously joked about the day when he ceased being an only child. Little did he know that the phrase would become a reality to his whole family.

The doctors couldn't tell that Hayari was as sick as she was until after she had been born. But then they diagnosed her with what they called an Immune System disorder. She was riddled with allergies, and on top of that had developed a heart disorder. Ryou didn't know the details. He hadn't been there. He'd been told to stay at home by his parents, and just come and visit them if he felt like it later. Besides, he'd been told they'd return home the next day with the baby.

Now it looked baby would stay in hospital for the next month.
And then go in and out for the rest of her life.

Ryou had been informed by his father - who he had never seen so distraught before. The shock didn't hit him as hard at first. He took the news as saddening, but it wasn't until he arrived at the hospital himself and had been informed to introduce himself to the tiny baby as "Nii-San" that realized just what he was in for. He could see everybody trying to stay positive. Thanks to their wealth as a family and modern medicine, the baby was going to survive, at least for the next couple of years. But it was almost all in vain.

They'd been told it was an incurable disorder.

And Ryou had been in a foul mood ever since. Apparently it had just been luck that was to blame for the whole ordeal, except Ryou believed there was more to it then that. He'd personally seen his stepmother drink excessive alcohol, and insist on sticking to her stupid "model diet" the entire time she had been pregnant. There was no scientific proof of it - and his father refused to believe it too - but Ryou couldn't deny the possibility that at least part of the reason was her negligence. It would make sense too. Of the lot of them, she seemed to least shocked or upset. And she was a real drama queen too. But he hadn't seen her crying yet.

Ryou wasn't entirely sure if having Kei around was a good thing either. Sure, she talked to him the whole time he sat at home, anxious about what was going on with Hayari - but then he felt like he was spreading his depression onto her as well - or forcing her to deal with his - and after everything else she had been through these past couple of months, he didn't want to do that. It was just an extra kick in the face that the kid had seemingly been named after her too. He talked to her whenever he felt like it, but otherwise he just ignored her. He knew it wasn't exactly a nice thing to do, but he had no idea how he was supposed to react.

Only it seemed that like after a while, Kei had had enough.

Ryou had been ignoring her for the millionth time when she suddenly stood up, and walked over to the other room. She came back after making what Ryou suspected was a phone call, saying some something about meeting Toya - who she had explained the situation to - somewhere and going out for some fresh air and hunting for something. He wasn't entirely sure what she had been trying to get at - but it hardly mattered. She just grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him out of the house, without even giving him a moment to object - or say anything at all.

And that was how he ended up with Kei, surrounded by snow for a mile radius in the middle of nowhere apparently waiting for Toya to show up.

Suffice to say, he wasn't too amused. Nor did he have much patience left.

"Kei... What the hell are we doing here?!"

Toya’s morning had begun as usual. He had quickly fallen right back into his daily routine after his emotional reunion with Kohaku and Hisui, and everything was business as usual, as if he had never even been gone. After finishing off the almost excessively large morning meal that Kohaku had prepared for him, Toya was now leaning back in the large chair in his office, pretending to look through a large stack of documents on his desk. In reality, he would skim the first and last page or two, sign off on them, and then toss them into his ‘finished work’ pile.

Just as he casually flicked another several pages onto the floor, Hisui entered the room and gave a respectful bow.

“Toya-sama, I just received a call from Murasaki-san. Apparently she and Yutaka-san need you to meet with them immediately. She says it’s incredibly urgent, and she sounded serious about it.”

Toya jumped from his seat and dashed towards the door, narrowly avoiding a collision with the poor maid as she scrambled to get out of his way. All these weeks of peace and complacency would have probably started to dull his senses and natural instincts if it weren’t for his daily training sessions, a tradition that had regretfully originated back when his father had forced him into it. Now he willingly forced himself to complete the daily drills and exercises he needed to stay fit and alert. If his team needed him, he would be there, ready to help with whatever trouble they had fallen into.

Grabbing his weapon pouch and other assorted equipment as he headed downstairs, Toya paused and did a short double-take when he passed the large mirror in the main hallway of the mansion. He was still getting used to seeing his own eyes, natural human eyes, instead of the masking dark lenses or the true abominations that lay beneath them. The colored lenses were surprisingly effective, but how would people react to him now? Would they be surprised? Would they believe that his excuse or would they question his motives for playing blind for so many years? Either way, he knew he could count on Ryou and Kei. They already knew the full truth, so it wouldn’t even faze them. Probably…

Finally remembering that he had a very ‘urgent’ matter to attend to, Toya quickly sprinted through his front door, not bothering to close it behind him, and continued at a mad dash towards the point where he should be meeting his teammates. It had snowed heavily last night, and a light sheet of snowflakes was still descending upon the village as he ran. The frosty white precipitation was second-nature to all of the village residents, and people weren’t even affected by a light fall such as this.

After a few more minutes of running through the blindingly white landscape of the village, Toya finally spotted his teammates in the distance. Well, teammate actually. It was pretty hard to miss Kei’s hair and colorful wardrobe when the entire scene behind her was a blank white canvas. He quickly sprinted with one last burst of energy and then stopped in front of the two of them. He leaned forward to rest his hands on his knees and breathed heavily. Running in a frozen climate, especially in the snow, could take a lot of you, and this was the first real physical exertion that Toya had performed all day.

“What’s… up… guys? Hisui said… it was really important.”

Toya finally raised his head up to look them both in the eye for the first time in a long while. Instead of the usual darkness that would greet them, two normal white eyes with vibrantly colored irises stared back at them. The left orb was a stunning icy-blue color, while the right was a fiery shade of orange. It was at this moment that he seemed to finally piece a few facts together. Deserted area of the village. Massive snow drifts for hundreds of meters in every direction. Ryou and Kei without any sign of injury or fear in their expressions. Where the hell was the urgent situation?!

Kei had had enough of Ryou's moping.

He'd been there to help her deal with her problems when Kei had needed it most, so now it was her turn to help. She might not be able to cure his sister (yet), but she could find a way for him to take his mind off of all his issues and quit complaining for once.

And Kei knew just the way to do it, too!

...Hopefully.

Unfortunately, Ryou wasn't being very cooperative. Kei had to practically drag him out of the house, down the stairs, and all the way out of the village. She knew exactly where she was going; she'd been there many times, even before meeting Toya and Ryou. Ryou, on the other hand... he clearly had no idea where they were, and didn't seem all too happy about it.

"Kei... What the hell are we doing here?!"

Before she had a chance to respond, Toya finally decided to show up.

“What’s… up… guys? Hisui said… it was really important.”

"It is!" Kei grinned. "Just wait for it, they're almost--hey, what happened to your eyes?" Kei blinked, looking over her teammate a second time. She hadn't seen him in a while, Kei realized, not since they'd parted after the mission. For the most part, he was still the same Toya she knew--except for one thing. His eyes were different; instead of the dark black and red from before, they were bright blue and orange now. Colorful. She was going to have to find out how he did that...

...Suddenly, Kei's attention shifted.

Slowly coming into view at the top of a distant hill, there was a small black shape. The small shape grew as it moved closer and closer, eventually separating intself into several small shapes. As they moved... no, marched closer, the shapes revealed themselves to be...

Penguins.

A single line of small, round, tuxedoed birds was gradually making it's way closer to the three genin, marching in perfect formation. Kei beamed.

"There they are!!"

Startled by Kei's sudden outburst, one of the smallest penguins lost its balance and toppled over. As if on cue, the entire formation of penguins halted, waiting patiently as the little one flailed around in the snow for a moment and then, finally, righted itself. The group continued on with their very important march, waddling straight past Ryou as though they didn't even see him.

Kei whirled around to face her teammates.

"That's the important thing I wanted to show you! Aren't they awesome??"

“What’s… up… guys? Hisui said… it was really important.”

Toya's timely appearance spared Kei having to answer Ryou's questions. Hmph, Ryou thought to himself, just as well, considering that Kei probably didn't have any logical explanation anyway.

Despite not seeing his teammate for months now, Ryou could have been more excited about coming in contact with Toya again. He merely nodded, aknowledging Toya's existance, and then looked away. This wasn't the time or place for a reunion - now he was just cold on top of everything else. He just wanted to go home and think. Think about how much his life sucked, and how he could fix it.

Fix it on his own.

"It is! Just wait for it, they're almost--hey, what happened to your eyes?"

Unsuprisingly, Kei showed far more enthusiasm about Toya than he did. Ryou folded his arms, looking around once more - now noticing the eye color change that Kei was talking about. It only went to show how out of sorts he was; he hadn't even been able to notice such a drastic transition at first glance. But even so, it still failed to hold much interest. Ryou was far more captivated by the start of Kei's sentence - the "They're almost..." part. Who on earth was this "they" she had been talking about...? How on earth could she call on to fix the situation...?

...

Ryou suddenly shuddered. A mental image had popped into his head. One featuring a counsellor.
He'd been and seen a counsellor once before. When he was very young, his father had sent him there to fix his apparent "anger management" problem which had led to many humiliating situations at the academy. Needless to say... it hadn't ended well. Ryou's unfortunate father had to pay half his worth in gold to compensate for all the broken furniture.

...Gah, what was he thinking. Like Kei had the brains nor connections to call a counsellor. And it wasn't like he needed one anyway. He was just a bit... worried, that was all. And that's why he really needed to go home.

"...Look guys. I don't know what you're planning but I really just want t-"

"There they are!!"

Cut off, Ryou turned around to face the hill Kei was indicating, suddenly making sense of everything.

And how stupid everything was.

They penguins marched like a line of soldiers, completely unfathomed by the steep hill or the presence of the genin. Then the leader - the smallest of all - fell over, and the rest of the penguins just... halted. Even though it wasn't possible for those at the back to have even noticed the first one's plight. Ryou blinked. They were so organized. So ordered. So without a care in the world.

Unlike him.
For some reason, that made him angry.

Ryou's arms unfolded, his hands curling into fists as the penguins marched right past him. He didn't even know what he was mad at now, nor exactly why. Was it these penguins for just living their happy lives? Was it Kei for coming up with this retarded idea? Was it his stepmother for causing his sister's illness? Was it Toya for just.... existing?

He didn't know. But he didn't need to.

Even with the "new and improved" Ryou, there was a line.
And it was about to be crossed.

"That's the important thing I wanted to show you! Aren't they awesome??"

With that, Ryou completely lost it.

"That's it? That's the important thing!?!" He turned his glare from Kei to the penguins marching right past him. The stupid things didn't even stop for him... they just walked right past.

"...Hell, I appreciate your concern Kei, I really do, but-"

Ryou's brows furrowed as he walked past the line himself, faster than the birds by far. He came to the front of the parade with only a couple of paces. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes.

"...I'm not in the mood Kei. Seriously, I thought you knew me better..."

Ryou lifted foot with all the frustration he could muster. Without thinking, he dug his shoe into the abdomen of the first penguin - the pathetic thing hadn't even stopped at the sight of him - and flicked forward.

"...I thought you'd know just how freaking stupid I think this whole thing is!"

His kick was much too strong for all of them, let alone the baby. It toppled over once more, this time falling faster and further back than before. And then it's head hit the tummy of the one behind, and that one fell too. On and on the penguins fell. Like a row of dominoes. All down to the last one.

But Ryou was both too angry, and too dumb to just stop there.

"Grah! Die!"

He kicked forward once more, this time from underneath the body of the first penguin.

"Goooooorrrrrrk~"

Just like a football, the penguin soared into the air, flying off in the direction it came. The remaining penguins were helpless, all still flailing on the floor. Heh, that only made Ryou's job easier.

He didn't stop. He took a step forward, doing the same thing to the next penguin. And then the next. And the one after.

"Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!"

Before long the air was filled with penguin cries, and it was raining kicked penguins.
And all along, poor Ryou was completely unaware of the death sentence he'd just given himself.

Toya finished catching his breath and finally stood up straight by the time either of his teammates responded to his entrance. It didn’t surprise him in the slightest that Kei would be the first one to pipe up with her usual enthusiasm.

"It is! Just wait for it, they're almost--hey, what happened to your eyes?"

Toya blinked. Who were almost what? Maybe there really was going to be something urgent and exciting after all! He quickly glanced left and right, but only the endless white blanket met his eyes. He sighed and turned his attention back towards Kei, ready to answer her question about his eyes, when Ryou quickly cut in.

"...Look guys. I don't know what you're planning but I really just want t-"

"There they are!!"

Quickly turning in anticipation of seeing a pack of thieves or a group of wild animals or anything even remotely worth exerting some energy on, Toya stared in disbelief as a line of penguins came over the hill in an almost military-like fashion. The small one at the head of the group stumbled upon hearing Kei’s sudden shout, and Toya couldn’t hold back a small, amused grin from appearing on his face. It really was hard to stay mad or even annoyed in a situation like this.

"That's the important thing I wanted to show you! Aren't they awesome??"

Toya opened his mouth to reply when the dormant Mt. Ryou Rage erupted for the first time in what felt like ages.

"That's it? That's the important thing!?!"

A penguin parade wasn’t exactly what Toya had been expecting or hoping for either, but was Ryou really that upset about it? For the first time since they had met, Toya was genuinely surprised at his teammate’s sudden angry complaints.

"...Hell, I appreciate your concern Kei, I really do, but... I'm not in the mood Kei. Seriously, I thought you knew me better..."

Huh? Concern? Had something happened with Ryou that Toya wasn’t aware of? He always assumed that his rich friend from such an esteemed family lived a practically perfect life and solved all of his problems through his father’s money and influence in the country, but apparently even he had problems at home. Probably revolving around that creepy stepmother of his…

"...I thought you'd know just how freaking stupid I think this whole thing is!"

Ryou’s kick sent the little penguin sprawling backwards into the bird behind him, sending the entire line tumbling to the floor in an unfortunate chain reaction.

“Woah, Ryou, what are you doing?! Calm down!”

"Grah! Die!"

Either his teammate hadn’t heard him, or he was simply ignoring him. Regardless of which it was, Ryou was on a crazed rampage, sending the defenseless penguins flying in unpredictable directions with each strong kick.

"Goooooorrrrrrk~"

"Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!"

Toya ran forward, reaching his arms forward and smoothly catching the first small penguin as it plummeted down from the sky, quickly setting it on the snowy ground as he continued moving forward.

”Calm the hell down, Ryou! I don’t know what’s going on, but that was completely unnecessary! Kei doesn’t deserve that kind of reaction from you for trying to show you something she thinks is interesting, and these animals certainly don’t deserve this treatment either!”

Making another running catch and drop of a second raining penguin, Toya continued moving in a zigzag route, trying to predict the landing points of as many of the flightless birds as possible in order to reach and catch the maximum possible amount. Assuming that Kei would be quick enough to follow his lead, they just might be able to get all of them, or at least the majority. And even the ones that landed would at least have a nice snow cushion to fall on. Ryou’s foot had already caused them more damage than any of their falls would.

The big question running through Toya’s mind was why Ryou had suddenly snapped in the first place. He had seemingly matured quite a bit during their long detour mission around the world, so what had suddenly changed back here in Yuki...?

"That's it? That's the important thing!?!"

...Apparently not everyone shared Kei's love of penguins. As shocking as that revelation was, there had actually been a time when Kei would have expected it from Ryou. Now, though, it came as a surprise. At the sight of the marching penguins, Kei's teammate looked downright angry.

"...Hell, I appreciate your concern Kei, I really do, but... I'm not in the mood Kei. Seriously, I thought you knew me better..."

Ryou made his way to the head of the line of penguins; Kei didn't stop him. He'd calm down after getting a closer look at their cuteness, she knew he would. Anyone would. Right?

Wrong.

"Goooooorrrrrrk~"

Penguin Number One soared through the air. Kei gasped, having figured out far too late just how it had gotten there. She immediately charged after it and the the unfortunate penguins that followed as they fell to Earth. Luckily Toya was there to help, and between the two of them Toya and Kei managed to rescue all of the penguins from cold, snowy doom. Already the disoriented birds were attempting to waddle back into formation, continuing their march as if nothing had happened. Kei, however, had other plans.

Without a word, she snatched up the littlest penguin, darted over to Ryou, and promptly shoved it into his arms. The bird let out a tiny "gork D:" of terror and helplessly trembling in fear at the sight of its attacker.

"Now apologize," Kei hissed, taking a step back. "And don't even think about hurting him, else you'll be the one getting booted halfway to Suna," she threatened, as an afterthought.

So much for the new and improved Ryou 2.0. Apparently this new model was defective, Kei mused, because a person had to be pretty seriously messed up to even consider kicking penguins, of all things. It didn't take much guessing to figure out the source of the problem, but if Ryou wasn't planning on talking about it, he'd be kicking penguins forever. Besides, Toya had a right to know what was going on.

So there was only one thing for Kei to do.

"Out with it. What's your problem?"

It was like a production line. One by one the penguins were sent hurling into the air, Ryou pacing forward to kick each one, Kei and Toya darting around to catch them before returning them swiftly to their march.

”Calm the hell down, Ryou! I don’t know what’s going on, but that was completely unnecessary! Kei doesn’t deserve that kind of reaction from you for trying to show you something she thinks is interesting, and these animals certainly don’t deserve this treatment either!”

Ryou was oblivious to Toya's yelling. Actually, he was pretty oblivious to everything about the dire situation unfolding around him.

In the past he would just express his anger and frustration whenever it came about, but nowadays he had taken to keeping it cooped up, pooling together until the perfect time came to vent it all out as one.

Unfortunately, just coming to the end of the fifty strong line of penguins didn't seem to be enough to get rid of said anger - his foot still felt the need to uncontrollably swing and send some other defenseless animals to their inevitable doom. Without a second thought, he turned on his heel, making to pace back to the front of the restored penguin march, ready to start again.

"Now apologize,"

He would have gone on too, if Kei hadn't confronted him, Ryou's terrified initial victim in hand.
Pity he couldn't care less.

Ryou folded his arms, turned his head and grunted. Thankfully, he'd developed his morals just enough to stop himself from just kicking her across the plain too - but he still wasn't up to dealing wit her. She should have known this would have happened after how stupid her idea had been in the first place.

"And don't even think about hurting him, else you'll be the one getting booted halfway to Suna,"

"See if I f*cking care. Suna - heck, anywhere's better than her- HEY!"

Before Ryou could even make to fold his arms tighter or defend himself somehow, Kei had somehow managed to shove a penguin into them. Ryou stared at the cold, squishy little thing for five whole seconds before frowning. The poor animal let out another fearful cry at the sight of his face.

Kei used it as a cue to take further action.

"Out with it. What's your problem?"

"...Gah. Anybody with an IQ above twenty could work out what my freaking "problem" is! And that saying "sorry" to a stupid little bird that can't even fly isn't going to fix it,"

In the course of speaking, Ryou had decided that death glaring the helpless penguin wasn't enough. Almost automatically, he began to squeeze his fingers together, as though he was just going to squish the penguin to death or something.

"...But since you're so bloody keen, I'll tell you. Most of it involves you anyway. My life has just been hell since we got back from that mission. I blew up everything I owned and I thought I was doing the right thing, but my parents, they're just using that to take advantage of me, and my stepmother's just gotten even worse, and and Kei you know what happened yesterday,"

He squeezed it harder, the snow residue melting between his hands, rendering the penguin as warm as can be now.

"I've told so many lies and tried so hard to let you live in my house and then when something else goes wrong for me - this is how you bloody choose to fix it?! My sister's got an incurable disease. Incurable. It means it can't be fixed. I suppose it would have been alright if my dad actually cared about that more than work and my stepmother actually had a heart. But no. It's her freaking fault - I've caught her smoking and drinking and everything and my dad never does anything to stop it. He just tells me off if I try to set her straight. I don't even have an allowance anymore."

He suddenly had an urge to wipe his eyes. Pity he couldn't with two iron grips on the penguin.

"I wish I could do something for Hayari, but there's not enough medics here and my stepmother doesn't particularly care about her, so my father doesn't either. Yuki's bloody politics are more important than a functioning medical system. It's all a f*cking mess."

Squish, squish, squish. Why wouldn't the stupid thing explode already?

"I wish I just couldn't care about it. Like it used to be. But I've put aside my old life for this team, and it's hardly rewarding isn't it. Everything has just been going wrong and and-"

"Gork........... D:?"

He didn't even know how it happened. It was like the supreme squishyness of the penguin had just torn away his spiky outer shell. Whatever it was, suddenly he found himself in the middle of a large snowy field, hugging a penguin as tight as he could, tears running down his face. His teammates stood around, a little white faced from his outburst, but listening patiently.

Like they always did.
Always listening to him. He who needed penguins and teammates to help him fix everything.

Him. Really the only stupid one there.

"...I-I just wish I was able to fix my own issues. I really am a stupid useless stupid spoilt jerk, you were right, guys. I'm sorry,"

Toya slumped over slightly where he was standing, taking slow, deep breaths. First he had sprinted all the way here from his own in the snow followed almost immediately by this game of ‘catch the raining penguins’ that Ryou had so kindly started for him and Kei. He watched as Kei snatched the small penguin ‘leader’ and shoved him into Ryou’s arms angrily.

"Now apologize. And don't even think about hurting him, else you'll be the one getting booted halfway to Suna."

Toya’s dual-colored eyes blinked in surprise. It wasn’t often that Kei became this angry over anything. In fact, this was probably the angriest he had seen her since… probably since before their never-ending mission back when the three of them fought every other minute they spent together. Either she really, really loved penguins, or there was something else going on that he didn’t know about.

"See if I f*cking care. Suna - heck, anywhere's better than her- HEY!"

"Out with it. What's your problem?"

"...Gah. Anybody with an IQ above twenty could work out what my freaking "problem" is! And that saying "sorry" to a stupid little bird that can't even fly isn't going to fix it."

Anybody could see what his problem was? Did Ryou think that everyone in the village somehow knew exactly was what bothering the Daimyo’s poor little son every day of the week? Toya would have rolled his eyes, but he was actually a little curious to see what exactly had set off his teammate this time. It certainly seemed a lot more important than his usual petty complaints.

Kei was living at Ryou’s place? Ryou had a sister? Aforementioned sister had an incurable disease? Ryou’s slu… stepmother and father were neglecting Ryou and poorly raising their new daughter? Ryou wasn’t getting an allowance anymore?! …Okay, so that last revelation wasn’t really all that important, but the rest of them hit Toya like a pile of bricks. He had no idea that Ryou had been going through so much since their return to the village. And if Kei was staying at his place, then it looked like something was up with her and her family members as well. It was a little ironic that Toya, the one who most certainly had the harshest childhood of the three was now the one experiencing the most carefree lifestyle in the present.

"I wish I just couldn't care about it. Like it used to be. But I've put aside my old life for this team, and it's hardly rewarding isn't it. Everything has just been going wrong and and-"

Toya took a few steps towards Ryou who had begun to let his tears and emotions flow freely. Even if the midst of his trials, it was good to see that he was still trying to be honest with his feelings and with his teammates. Toya and Kei could only help him if he was willing to let them, and now he was beginning to open up to them.

"...I-I just wish I was able to fix my own issues. I really am a stupid useless stupid spoilt jerk, you were right, guys. I'm sorry,"

Whack! Toya planted his right hand with a stinging impact onto Ryou’s back, a mixed gesture of camaraderie and admonition. His teammate certainly hadn’t chosen an effective or smart way to vent his problems, but at least he had been open with them in the end. Seeking help from people who care is the first step to solving many problems.

”Yeah, you are a pretty big jerk, and maybe you aren’t always the smartest guy in the village either, but you’re definitely not useless. This team only works because we all keep trying so hard to make it work. When even just one of us stops trying, everything falls apart almost instantly.”

Toya couldn’t help but grin as he pulled his hand back and looked from Ryou to Kei and back to Ryou again.

”Maybe we can’t solve all of your problems right now, or maybe not even one of them. It took us a long time just to get where we are now as a team, but sticking together is how we did it. Teammates and friends cover each others' backs, and we can help each other with things that we just can’t solve ourselves. So basically… yeah, that’s it. I’m not a great orator, but I hope you get the gist of what I’m saying. Just cheer up so we can get back to being that fun, crazy, and dysfunctional team that the whole village thinks we are.”

A short laugh escaped from Toya as he realized just how ridiculous this scene was with the three genin huddled around, one of them crying and holding onto a penguin for dear life. He reached out with the same hand that had collided with Ryou’s back, this time gently patting the top of the small penguin’s head, a gesture that Toya supposed was the equivalent of ‘petting’ the bird. Yeah, maybe it wasn’t the coolest or most dignified action, but that sort of stuff really lost all its importance when he was with these two. Right now the spirit of the moment was all that mattered to him, and everything else would just fade away into the white nothingness surrounding them.
